Abstract
The purpose of this research is to provide information on the state of censorship in China. Topics such as Chinese history, reasons for censorship, current Chinese government legislation, and news will be analyzed to deliver a complete explanation into censorship laws. The following is a brief introduction of different censorship regulations: The Chinese government has created “The Great Firewall,” which is a firewall created to filter out particular search engines and social media networks. Chinese censorship originates to early emperors in the Tang Dynasty burning books and continues through the modern “Golden Shield” (otherwise known as the Great Firewall), which blocks certain social media apps such as Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook. To ensure citizens do not develop negative connotations of their government, China’s leadership has hired members of the “50 Cent Army,” to post about how much they appreciate their government. These members are paid fifty cents per post, and work for hours a day. Overall, the findings of this research will help educate and inform the reader on Chinese government rights and restrictions concerning freedom of speech and self- expression, in relation to social media an internet service use.
